As we head down the homestretch of the 2019-20 high school season, it’s time to take a look at the best available West Coast 2020 prospects still on the board. While one major recent verbal commitment was Windward/Los Angeles’ 6-5 sharpshooting wing Devin Tillis to UNLV, there are still available a significant number of players like Jalen Green, Ziaire Williams, Josh Christopher, Jaylen Clark and Mwani Wilkerson who figure to be impact college freshman as well as several others with intriguing long-term college potential.
With that in mind, let’s take a look at my current Top 30 West Coast unsigned seniors plus several others worth mentioning:
1. Jalen Green 6’5” WG Prolific Prep (Napa CA)
Jalen has come a very long way since the first time I saw him play at the 2015 Pangos Junior All-American Camp where as an 8th grader he impressed me and the scouts in attendance enough to earn camp MVP honors. Ultra-athletic wing guard with very improved perimeter stroke is already on the NBA Draft radar. Oregon, Auburn, USC, Florida State and Memphis are currently in a dogfight for Green with the overseas pro route also being an option. Currently checks-in at #3 nationally in Van Coleman’s Nothing But Net Magazine rankings.
2. Ziaire Williams 6’8” WF Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth CA)
Extremely talented wing forward can score in lots of ways. Very good shooter (with accurate 3-point range) and length and super-bounce to finish over defenders at the cup, Ziaire has real NBA potential. Arizona, USC and Stanford appear to be the leaders at the moment with North Carolina, Duke, Virginia, UCLA, Oregon and many other HMs extending offers the past 3 years. Williams presently comes in at #5 nationally in Van Coleman’s Nothing But Net Magazine rankings.
3. Josh Christopher 6’5” WG Mayfair (Lakewood CA)
“JayGup” is a human-highlight film every time he steps on the court. Strong like an ox and explosive like a cannon ball en route to the hoop, dangerous from beyond the 3-point arc, Christopher has all the tools to be an offensive machine at the next levels and when he is focused defensively, he is as good as any guard in the nation. Arizona State (visited this past weekend), UCLA, Michigan, Missouri and Howard appear to comprise his final list of schools. Josh is in the #13 spot nationally in Van Coleman’s Nothing But Net Magazine rankings.
4. Jaylen Clark 6’5” WG Etiwanda (CA)
Clark (a Corona Centennial transfer) is an energetic wing with natural scoring instincts that has all the necessary skills to create his own shot. Led Compton Magic Elite to last year’s Fantastic 40 tourney in Las Vegas NV, defeating Seattle Rotary in title game and earning MVP honors. UCLA, Arizona, Oregon, USC and Oklahoma are among the schools jockeying for his spring NLI signature. Clark currently sits in the #67 position in Van Coleman’s Nothing But Net Magazine rankings.
5. Mwani Wilkerson 6’6” WF Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas NV)
Extremely athletic forward who has immensely improved his perimeter skills is also a good student. LSU and Vanderbilt appear to lead Mwani’s other contenders USC, Texas Tech and UNLV. Wilkerson is ranked #93 by Van Coleman’s Nothing But Net Magazine rankings.
6. Andre Eduardo 6’9” PF AZ Compass Prep (Chandler AZ)
Active PF with great length and athleticism is hearing from the likes of Auburn, Ole Miss and Virginia Tech. Van Coleman’s Nothing But Net Magazine #114 senior prospect. Andre’s strong play at last June’s Pangos All-American Camp earned him a spot in Eric Bossi’s Rivals 150.
7. Boubacar Coulibaly 6’10” C San Gabriel Academy (San Gabriel CA)
Shotblocker-supreme with agility and tremendous upside. Schools showing interest at the moment include USC, Washington State and Loyola Marymount. Currently #149 in Van Coleman’s Nothing But Net Magazine senior rankings.
8. Carlos Rosario 6’7” WG Veritas Prep (Santa Fe Springs CA)
Dominican Republic native is a long wing with a very versatile skill set that includes deep 3-point range. Rosario has offers from Mississippi State, New Mexico, Boise State and Pacific.
9. Fallou Diagne 6’11” C AZ Compass Prep (Chandler AZ)
Long and athletic shot-blocker can also catch and finish with explosion at the rim. Very intriguing long-term high-major upside.
10. Ty Harper 6’3” WG Santa Clarita Christian (Santa Clarita CA)
Quick and bouncy lefty wing has been one of the season’s top surprises and has a recent Virginia Tech offer. Intense competitor and excellent defender.
11. Dischon Jackson 6’10” C St. Vincent/St. Mary (Vallejo CA)
Long and agile forward is considering a potential school reclassification with Brewster, Woodstock and Northfield Mt Herman being possible post-grad destinations.
12. Jaden Jones 6’5” WG St. Anthony (Long Beach CA)
Wiry guard is averaging 20 ppg and 6 rpg this season including a 35 point (6 “threes”) explosion in a decisive win over Long Beach Poly. Jones received a recent Long Beach State offer (visiting The Beach this weekend). Father Derek Jones was a JC All-American at Long Beach City College and starting forward at Cal State Fullerton in mid-late 1980s.
13. Amound Anderson 6’3” CG Leuzinger (Lawndale)
Sleeper West Coast lead guard has impressive scoring skills and the potential to be a potent Mid-Major (or higher) bucket-getter.
14. Xavion Brown 6’3” WG Sheldon (Sacramento CA)
Athletic WG knows how to apply heavy defensive on-ball pressure. Uses his quickness to slash to hoop to score as well.
15. Ziare Wade 6’3” WG Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth CA)
Son of NBA great Dwyane Wade has not had the senior season he had envisioned after transferring to Sierra Canyon from Miami FL. Hampered by injury and due to the log-jam of talent on the Blazer roster, Wade has not put up big numbers but is quick off the bounce with perimeter range to the 3-point arc.
16. Tyrelle Hunt 6’5” WF Coronado (Henderson NV)
Strong and very productive forward has a versatile skill set. Savvy around the cup with excellent perimeter range makes him a hard match-up. “Fat Daddy” is a good student too.
17. Demetrius Calip 6’4” WG Taft (Woodland Hills CA)
Thin but high-scoring lefty guard has both 3-point range and can finish above the rim. Father (Demetrius Sr.) played for Michigan’s national title squad in 1989. Solid student and great kid.
18. Luis Riascos 6’5” CG Veritas Prep (Santa Fe Springs CA)
Savvy combo-guard with nice size makes plays on both ends and has offers from Cal State Fullerton and Montana State.
19. Anthony Hunter 6’0” PG Durango (Las Vegas LV)
Crafty lead guard makes clutch shots. Hearing from Missouri State, Southern Illinois and Montana State.
20. Shemar Morrow 6’5” WF Shadow Mountain (Phoenix AZ)
Strong and athletic swingman is a lefty with an improved perimeter stroke. Likely headed to JUCO.
21. Fidelis Okereke 6’6” PF King-Drew (Los Angeles CA)
Strong and active PF is productive on both ends of the floor. Slightly undersized, Fidelis plays much bigger than his height and rebounds at an impressive clip. Good student too.
22. Michael Ofoegbu 6’7” WF Golden State Prep (Napa CA)
Long and swift swingman with refined offensive skills has a UMass-Lowell offer with interest from St. John’s, New Mexico, Long Beach State, Montana State, Hawaii and San Diego. Spending a post-grad year at GSP after playing his high school ball at Mayfair/Lakewood CA.
23. Malvin Payero 6’0” PG Valley Christian (Cerritos CA)
Tough as nails lead guard plays with great confidence has real scoring ability. Dominican Republic native is hearing from UC-Riverside, UMass-Lowell and Stetson.
24. Brase Dottin 6’5” WF Harvard-Westlake (North Hollywood CA)
Strong and athletic forward with improved offensive skills is hearing from Loyola Marymount & Cornell. Good student as well.
25. Luke Haupt 6’7” WF St. Augustine (San Diego CA)
Sharpshooting WF with strong build is the son of St. Augustine head coach Mike Haupt.
26. Christian Oliver 6’10” C Maranatha (Pasadena CA)
Big body post-man can score on the block but needs to improve his agility and ability to rebound outside his area.
27. Makai Richards 6’8” PF Oak Park (CA)
Late-blooming post-forward is a very good rebounder and emerging rim-protector.
28. Jaren Johnson 6’4” WG Lynwood (CA)
Wing guard with nice size can score (although inconsistent at times) and has nice long-term potential.
29. Vaughn Flowers 6’2” CG Rolling Hills Prep (Palos Verdes CA)
Quick combo-guard can get to the cup with explosion off the dribble.
30. L Simpson 6’2” CG Golden State Prep (Napa CA)
Aggressive guard really knows how to apply on-ball pressure and is an underrated slashing scorer and mid-range jump shooter. Very good student played a key role on Sierra Canyon’s 2019 state championship squad.
** Special Mention
** D’maurion Williams 6’5″ CG Putnam Science Academy (CT)
Phoenix AZ native is spending a post-grad year at Putnam Science (CT). Former Westview (Avondale AZ) star is a strong slashing scorer with range to the 3-point arc and ability to also make plays for others. Williams averaged 18.5 ppg at this past weekend HoopHall Prep Showcase, shooting 13/17 FG and 7/8 on 3s.
